28th - "A Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man"

Edinburgh

(Joyce's semi-autobiographical novel, first published n 1917)

I guess I'm not alone, but I've always found Joyce difficult to read; it took me several weeks to finish 'Ulysses', and 'Finnegan's Wake' is one of the very few books I've never completed despite many attempts to do so. But 'Portrait' seemed like an easier read altogether

LOL, here I am as a fresh-faced youth - winter 1985 I think (25 years ago!!) before the ravages of children and having to work for a living put paid to my dashing good looks :o)). Obviously, this pic wasn't taken in the last few days, but I did scan it at the weekend; I discovered a box of slides and amongst other gems from the past was this :o)...so I suppose you could say that's it's fresh by that criteria!

Having scanned it, I desaturated it, cleaned it up a bit and added a bit of a Curve; I cropped to a square and resized

A fine portrait and apt title. "A Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man" is the only book by Joyce that I finished. So you are ahead of me. :)

Great portrait of the young Doug. You look like happy, inquisitive and eager young man. I'm with you on the reading. I found "Portrait.." an easy read, "Ulysses" was more challenging. I read it using several reference books to catch some of the many allusions and I enjoyed it tremendously. "Finnegan's Wake" seems daunting to me, and it's on my list of books to read. Maybe some summer Mrs. Amoxtli and I will read it together. The best reads of my life have been with her, and the discussions after each chapter even better. Love and books go together. :)
