18th - "The Many Hands"

Cheltenham, Glos.

(A 2008 Dr. Who story by Dale Smith)

I do like a good Dr. Who adventure, and this one certainly rollicks along in 18th century Edinburgh...thanks to Finn for suggesting the title :o). As you might have guessed, this is our three pairs of hands - funnily enough I didn't have to bribe the kids much to comply; maybe they're beginning to enjoy being occasional contributors to the Challenges!!

This one was easy - into ACR, increased the Clarity, decreased Brightness, added a Curve to bring out the contrasts...then to CS3 where I duplicated the Background layer. Working on this second layer, I converted to B&W via the Maximum White preset which I tweaked a little to get a glow effect. I then added a Curve Adjustment layer, altering the Red and Green channels to get the lith look. Going back to the original Background Layer, I added a Diffuse Glow; then I flattened the image and resized...and all in the time it took the vegetables to cook :o)

Nice image and idea! It must be the January blues and your kids are just looking for something to do! I'm going a bit stir crazy too without any sun :) I love your duaghters hands with the peeling nailpolish and pen :)

I love the composition and the subject a lot, it's heart-warming.
Maybe I would rather have a little bit more -or less?- contrast added in here to show this nice moment of confidence with more precision -or make it more abstract.

Handtastic! Well, someone had to say it ;o)) I don't think it's overcooked at all, in fact the blown areas seem to fit perfectly with the older, less 'polished' Dr. Who - the wobbly sets, dodgy monsters, improvised effects et-al. Black and white is one place where we don't need to worry too much about blowing highlights or blocking shadows - it can even add to the effect. I might be tempted to blow a lot more of it, so that the hands fade in gradually - just like after a TV explosion.... :o))
Having said all that - that thumb bottom left seems not to have a hand to belong to! lol

Certainly a super shot, love the layers... Having said that, you've over-cooked this one, lots of blown areas..
