Velvet Ant Dasymutilla

Twin Lakes, Lincoln Co, Washington

This one sagebrush plant was loaded with aphids and the Velvet ant moved rapidly up and down the branches with very few pauses. It did not seem to be interested in eating the aphids, so perhaps it feeds on the sweet nectar exude from them. The Dasymutilla is a solitary wasp rather than a true ant.
