Mendenhall Lake is a glacial melt pond at the terminus of the Mendenhall Glacier.
Large chunks of ice that have separated (or "calved") from the face of the glacier float
in the lake as they slowly melt. Located in the Tongass National Forest and just outside
of the capital city of Juneau, Alaska, the Mendenhall Glacier is one of 38 glaciers fed by
the Juneau Icefield. Nugget Falls can be seen in the background where Nugget Creek empties
into Mendenhall Lake. Nugget Creek is fed by snow melt and rain water.
