A Sunday in Soveria Mannelli

On Sunday, May 24, 2015, we were driven to Soveria Mannelli from our hotel in nearby Decollatura
by my Godmother's daughter, Irene. We spent some time on the street where my father was born
and actually got into the house, which is now renovated to 21st Century standards.
We then attended Mass in the church where my father once was an altar boy.

We then attended a family dinner hosted at a restaurant by my 80-year-old Godmother.
Afterwards, we returned to Soveria to visit a textile factory to make some purchases of
authentic Calabria fabrics and products.

Finally, I paid another visit to my father's street and walked around town for a brief time before
returning to my Godmother's home for more conversation.
My father was born in Soveria Mannelli on January 8, 1914. He came to America in 1931 and never returned to Italy. He died in 1973.

Thank you for commenting, Bog DeBlasi! It's wonderful to be in contact with another person with roots in Soveria! Many people have told me that Sirianni and Chiodo are very common names in Soveria. As someone once said, they are like Smith and Jones! My father who was born in 1914 had a childhood friend named Antonio Sirianni, who I met during my first visit to Soveria in 1975. My father died in 1973, I hope that some day you will be able to visit Soveria. My wife and I hope to return again, perhaps in 2018 or 2019. As someone whose ancestors came from Soveria Mannelli, I want to thank you for posting your photos. My Great Grandmother (Maria Teresa Sirianni) and her brothers came here in the late 1800's and early 1900's and settled in Windber, PA, New Jersey and Chicago, IL.
