The Salt Creek Pupfish (Cyprinodon salinus) is endemic to Salt Creek. We visited Salt Creek at the peak of the breeding season, when more than one million of these tiny fish
are present in the small stream. They are fast and very difficult to photograph. This was one case where a VR (vibration reduction) lens made the shot possible--but only barely.

An interpretive panel along the Salt Creek boardwalk compares the area to a coastal stream, and the comparison is accurate. The entire valley is a salt
marsh complete with pickleweed, saltgrass and numerous shorebirds. The stream's water is extremely salty, and its banks are covered with a salty crust.
