We were called to make a home visit for this young girl who was "losing her vision". She had been previously healthy up to one year ago when she developed dizziness, headaches, and vomiting. She progressively lost her vision until going completely blind about 6 months ago. While asking the parents a little more about her history, they unexpectantly handed me a brain MRI, which showed a large tumor originating from somewhere near her brainstem. We were told that there were initial plans for definitive diagnosis and treatment, but the family was unable to pay for the services, so the child returned home. Despite a lengthy discussion of her grave prognosis, I still got the feeling that her mother thought that her baby girl would wake up normal someday soon...
