The Blue Block

Hong Kong

The history of the Blue Block goes back to the 1920's when it was built.
It's got its name due to a split of ownership between the government and private holders.
When the government carried out maintenance of the building many years ago, only the part belonging to government was renovated.
The workers then used blue paint for the walls, the same color used by the Water Services Department at that time.
Hence the different colors and conditions of the building on different faces.
Right now, the building is still being inhabited by elderlies who cannot afford high rents elsewhere in Wanchai.
The building has no proper drainage design and still relies on dedicated bodies to dispose of their domestic wastes.
It's good news that the government has decided to regard the block as a historical structure and is going to renovate it into a place for artists to work and hold exhibitions.
Works will be underway in a few months.

A very unusual building and history. Thank you for providing a bit of a historical context.
