The passageway in the Theresienstadt (Terezín) concentration camp and ghetto.
This was the largest concentration camp in the Czech Republic during World War II.
Theresienstadt served primarily as a transit camp for Jews deported to extermination
camps such as Auschwitz. The Nazis cynically used it as a propaganda tool,
portraying it as a "health resort" or "model ghetto" for elderly Jews to conceal
the true nature of the deportations. Despite these circumstances, there was a
relatively rich cultural life, including concerts and lectures, made possible by the
Jewish self-administration. Today, the Terezín Memorial is a memorial site that
draws many visitors each year to commemorate the victims of Nazi persecution.
