The image shows the entrance to the Little Fortress (Malá pevnost) of
Theresienstadt (Terezín).Originally a military fortress built in the
18th century by the Habsburg monarch Joseph II, named after his mother,
Maria Theresa. During World War II, the fortress was used by the Gestapo
as a police prison. The nearby section, the "Great Fortress," served
as a Jewish ghetto and transit camp for deportations to extermination camps
in the east. More than 150,000 Jews were sent to Theresienstadt,
including 15,000 children, before being deported to other camps.
