These bunk beds are located in the Theresienstadt (Terezín) concentration camp in
the Czech Republic, which was used by Nazi Germany during World War II.
From 1940 onwards, it was used by the Gestapo as a Jewish ghetto and
concentration camp. It served as a transit camp for Jews from various countries,
including the Netherlands, before they were deported to extermination camps such
as Auschwitz. Living conditions were appalling, with overcrowding and little food,
leading to the deaths of thousands of prisoners.
