The guardhouse in the Theresienstadt (Terezín) concentration camp. Theresienstadt
was originally a fortified town, built by Emperor Joseph II, which was used by the
Nazis as a Jewish ghetto and concentration camp during World War II. It primarily
served as a transit camp for Jews deported to extermination camps such as Auschwitz.
Although it was not a direct extermination camp, 33,818 Jews died there due to the
appalling conditions. Today, it is an important historical site and monument in
the Czech Republic, which can be visited to commemorate its history.
