The sculpture in the image is the "Angel of the Meir" in Antwerp. It is a gilded statue that
stands on top of the former Grand Bazar building at house number 85 on the Meir.
The angel is an allegory of electricity, a revolutionary force at the time, symbolized by
the lightning bolts in her hands. The building, built around 1903-1905, was one of the first
department stores in Belgium and symbolized modernity. The sculpture looks out over the
shopping street like a kind of protective goddess.
