The sculpture depicts the Brabo Fountain in the Grote Markt in Antwerp, Belgium.
The bronze statue, created by Jef Lambeaux in 1887, depicts the legendary Roman soldier
Silvius Brabo. The fountain depicts Brabo throwing the severed hand of the giant Druon Antigoon
into the Scheldt River. According to legend, the giant cut off the hands of sailors who refused
to pay tolls. Brabo defeated the giant and did the same with his hand. The name Antwerp is said
to derive from "hand throwing." The fountain stands in front of Antwerp City Hall.
