This statue depicts the Madonna and Child, a common theme in Christian art. The statue is
located in a niche at the Chapel of Our Lady's Nativity and Almshouse, Schoenmarkt 8
in Antwerp. 1477, formerly also called "Almshouse." "Madonna" is Italian and means
"my lady," referring to the Virgin Mary. The statue depicts Mary holding the baby Jesus.
Both figures wear a crown, symbolizing their royalty and divine authority.
It is a religious work of art that is central to both Catholic and Orthodox churches.
A famous example of such a statue is Michelangelo's "Madonna of Bruges."
