935/2 "BABY"

The 935/2 or “Baby” was developed by Porsche to compete in the 2.0 Liter German National Championship. Since the 935 was so totally dominate in the World Championship of Makes, BMW withdrew from the Series leaving the only competition for the “Works Team” from private 935 teams. The answer was to show they could compete in any level, including the lower 2.0-liter class which were owned by BMW and Ford Escorts at the time. With a 1.42 Liter turbo motor 71mm bore x 60mm stroke (the equivalent to 2.0 liters unturbocharged) the 930/72 engine produced 370 bhp @ 8,000 rpm at 1.4 bar utilizing an air to air intercooler.

Other unique features of the “Baby” included: 915 five-speed gearbox, deleted main front oil cooler, fabricated boxed rear semi-trailing arms derived from the Turbo RSR, 13.5” rear wheels allowing a more streamlined body, a 100 liter fuel tank and a serious shedding of sheet metal, rearranging of various radiators and other radical changes brought the weight of the "Baby" down to a mere 710 Kg. Necessitating 20Kg. Of ballast to bring the car up to minimum weight of 730Kg. The "Baby" did not have a good first outing, with various new car teething problems and Jackie Ickx almost passing out from lack of ventilation on a very hot day. However by the next event at Hockenheim the “Baby” now fully sorted and race ready simply outclassed the field and won the race by over half a lap. Point Made!
