Apparently this was the main defense for Odawara castle. I once asked the question in class why European castle design and Japanese castle was so different. We eventually settled on the idea that Europeans had less mountains to work with while Europeans built on flatter land. I still think that the European design was better for defense, although Japanese castles look a bit nicer.
