Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge - 08/22/2012

Today the featured wildlife is actually a less than two week old fawn whitetail deer. This little fella was dropped off at the Refuge's Visitors Center by a neighbor of a man who had killed the fawn's Doe parent. The story goes that the "man"(?) heard a noise outside say the Doe attacking his dog, got his gun and killed the Doe to protect his dog. The later found the fawn and gave it to his neighbor to take to someone who would care for it. NOW, in actuality the Doe was protecting her fawn when the dog was attacking the fawn and just protecting her young. (Note: in the photo you can see the marks and cuts where the dog had the fawn's head in the dog's mouth.)

So now this man(?) that lives in the countryside has killed a deer out of season, which was doing what is a natural response and placed the burden of raising the fawn to someone else. The options this man(?) had are numerous since a Doe Whitetail deer is the most shy and tame animal and only is agressive when cornered or protecting their offsprings.

The Ranger who took this fawn in placed in fawn in a recovery program which will care for the fawn and prepare it for return to the wildlife population.....please note this program is operated through volunteers who care for the hurt, damaged, injured wildlife who are victims of actions by humans who do not think before acting or ignoring the visible signs before their action towards a species. While I will not judge the man's(?) actions as good or evil....I do wonder what sort of man is it that lives their life on first impressions or not knowing the demeanor of a living thing that dwells within the man's environment. Ignorance can casue great harm and discomfort to one of God's creations...Widom on the other side of the coin gives a person the ability to not react bu act maturely.

The remainder of the photos in today's walk-about are from the Visitor Center's observation building and the trails and service roads open to the public this time of the Summer Season.
