One Summer time activity within the WNWR system is to go to one of the off-site National Refuges to watch the brown bats at sundown fly from Sauta Cave NWR. To day the Rangers held a informational session at the cave entrance on the history of the cave and the environmental importance of these bats. Shortly after 8PM several hundred thousand bats exited the cave for their individual forage of insects. (There is only one photo taken at the beginning of the flights out due to the bright strobe light hampering these bats from their nightly freedom from the Sauta Cave.) An annual treat for the people who have never seen, or understood, the majesty of such a volume of mammals leaving their daytime home.
