Today due to limited time I spent a few minutes at a nearby Preserve that is unique for North Alabama. While it is not a part of the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge system, this spot is maintained by an organization which works well with WNR. This preserve contains mainly plantlife that is not abundant in other sections of our State. There are rock formations on the surface and very little soil cover and that is being controled by cedars and other semi-surface trees. As in the prairies in the midwest, there are no real land marks to spot the entrance once you wander throughout this area which is now containing Hot Summer flowers and blooming plants. The Spring wet areas are mainly dry now due to the rocky runoffs except for a few wet pools deep in the adjacent woods. A fine place to visit, even though it is out of the way, just as I do...when you visit this Preserve a handheld GPS or compass is a handy accessory or a roll of flagging to tie out on limbs when you travel in and to retrieve when you walk out. Since the parking lot is located in a very isolated area it is wise to put all valuables in the trunk and secure from being seen inside your vehicle.
