One of the "gems" of the WNWR System is the Key Cave Area just West of Florence, Alabama. This area is mainly a "prairie" or rolling field type refuge. Mainly grassland, the wildlife here include open area song birds, quail, foxes, butterflies and other insects. On the border of this Federal land is the Tennessee River and a rocky woodland with non-accessible caves for the protected blind cave fish species, bats, and other cae dwellers. Spring is a great time to visit this area as the agri-farmers plants specific areas for Winter food for the wildlife which helps concentrate the wildlife into non-disturbed areas of this small gem.
