This is a Ringneck Pheasant which is not a natural species for this area of the Country or the Refuge. These pheasants will be seen from time to time within the Refuge, as well as other non-natural species. The pheasants were imported into the State by local landowners adjacent to the Refuge's property. And, so, is protected from public hunting if it travels within the Refuge. In a way, the the fact that these birds sometimes roam the Refuge safely from those who brought them in for hunting sport but can not hunt them is either irony or comical....your choice.
