A Yellow-shafted Flicker (now combined with the Northern Flicker since 1980 and historically in this region called a "Yellow Hammer" due to the yellow feathering under it's wings. (One interesting point on this bird is that during and after the Civil War this bird was considered a mental reminder of the Confederate soldiers whose cloaks were gray with a yellow lining and certain military units who sported a red plume in their hats.)
