Ralph's Service Station

corner of 19th St. and 4th Ave.

I discovered this charming service station while exploring the Armory Park area. Sorry to say, I have no information on the structure.
Does anyone know of its history?

I lived in the duplex next door from 1941 to 1943. At that time the service station had been closed for some time and the lot was covered with weeds. 19th Street had not yet been paved so 4th Avenue was the only major street in the area. All interstate traffic was on 6th Avenue to the west. I have no knowledge of the restoration in the 1980's. I do have many photos of the duplex from the 1940's, but none unfortunately of the service station.

Ralph's station had been fully renovated and was in pristine condition as of the 1980's. I knew a renter in the duplex and I would often marvel at what a beautiful job they did on it. I recall seeing the Sinclair logo; perhaps on one of the pumps?

Unfortunately, some time in the late 1980's it was vandalized repeatedly. The owners eventually had to surround it with the fence you see today. Very sad comment on kids.

It's currently owned by William and Vicky Jacobs. I wish you luck on the renovation. Since it's an historical neighborhood, perhaps the City of Tucson has possible funding.
I was able to get my friend on 4th and 17th an interest free loan for her house.

My partner and I are the current owners of Ralphs. We've renovated the duplex that is associated with it - and are in the process of renovating Ralphs itself. We're sure that the building was ordered through the Sears catalogue but haven't yet identified the original owners or traced ownership over the years (Tucson records for that time are abysmal). We think it was a Sinclair gas station.

A small scene in a movie was shot there last week (19 Feb 2007).

I'll post more as we find information.
