Denali..."Dog of a Lifetime"

Our beloved malamute, Denali, passed away in Tucson, Arizona on March 22, 2004 after a sudden illness. She was only 8 years old. Adopted from the Homer Animal Shelter, she lived the first years of her life in Homer, Alaska. When she was around the age of 4, we took to the road to travel full-time in a motor home. Denali made several trips back to Alaska, spent her winters in Arizona and Mexico, and even spent a summer exploring New England and the Maritime Provinces.
And all the while she took care of 7 kitties in the motor home. Nali always had a special place in her heart for little animals, especially kittens.
She was a Delta Society Therapy Dog and enjoyed visiting nursing homes and senior centers in the Tucson area.

To us Nali truly was "the dog of a lifetime."

This celebration of her life is dedicated to the many friends who loved her and whom she loved in return.

Dear Joel, Thank you so much for your nice note. How wonderful that you rescued your Nali and that she has such a loving home with you. I haven't posted anything to this site in a long time and hope to always leave it here as a celebration of Denali's life with us. There's still not a day goes by that I'm not reminded of her in some way. She was such a sweet, beautiful dog. My best to you and your Nali and may you both have many, many wonderful years together hiking and exploring! Peg

Thanks for sharing your celebration of Nali's life. Everyone should be as lucky to have such a wonderful companion. I have a beautiful rescue dog I found near the Grand Canyon I named Nali. She wasn't much to look at when I first found her, but time and love have turned her into a beautiful and responsive little friend. She never leaves my side and it breaks her heart when I leave for work. When I return home we go on long mountain bike rides. Everyone always comments on how happy she looks and that fills me with such joy. Someone told me once that this existence is supposed to be their heaven and I have never thought about them the same way since. From the looks of it your little friend had a great time in heaven.

I googled "dog named Nali" for fun out of love for my own Nali. My Nali is a 4 year old Austrailian Shephard/German Shephard mix. She has the kindest heart and our family often refers to her as our version of "Nana". So nice to see your pictures. Very nice to see fellow ghost hunters. I just saw your gallery and the last picture of Nali looking at the water has me in tears. What a beautiful dog. You can see her quiet generosity of spirit in all these pictures. Thanks for sharing them with us. Maybe it is true that we don't own our dogs, they own us. You were lucky to be "owned" by a creature of such grace and beauty. What a gorgeous dog.

We lost our "Denali" in October 2004. She was a lab/samoyed mix and such a special, loving part of our family. Our girl traveled with us from the US to Germany to the Republic of Panama and back to the US and every person was touched by her samoyed "smile". Denali was 14 when she left our side but not our hearts. Our hearts are with you.

Such beautiful photos to recall Denali's life with you. I know that time will ease but never erase the sense of loss you are feeling. As you look at these photos, remember the full and happy life Denali had because of you. It matters more, I believe, how much love is in the time we have rather than how long we are here. You filled Nali's days with love.

Several years ago, I fell in love with Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies. Although I don't own one yet, I plan to someday. Seeing these pictures, even in the context of loss, helps me to understand that each day is precious and that good friends, be they people or pets, deserve to be celebrated as often as possible. That's what I see in your photographs - the love you had for Denali - and his love for you, too. This is a special gallery for me in many ways. Thanks for sharing them.

Dear Peg and Kathy, I happen to pull up your site to print out my Patrick's picture (you took at Quartzsite)and clicked on Denali's gallery afterwards. I am so sorry to hear of her passing over the Rainbow Bridge (Best Friends). Your pictures of Denali are just beautiful. I know how much it hurts to lose a dear friend, as I've had to go through it many times. What a wonderful life he had with you two, and how blessed you were to have him in your lives. What a beautiful dog. I am literally sitting here with tears streaming down my face. I just adopted two dogs from a rescue facility. They were both seriously abused and battered, but, in two short months, they have become my appendages. My biggest fear is dealing with their loss, hopefully many years from now. Your photos make me realize that I have SO much to look forward to with my beloved Nilla (shepherd/yellow lab mix)and Coco (chow and australian shepherd mix). THANK YOU for creating this page! I know how you feel - no really. I lost my gorgeous Toby (border collie cross) after being with him for 13 of his 16 year long life. It's 5 years at the end of March since he lost his struggle and there's not a day when I don't miss him (sad though that is). Nothing ever seems the same. You are lucky to have good photos - I never had that. Cherish the memory and remember the good times, that's the only consolation.

Denall looks a wonderful dog. I feel for your loss. Our two dogs also came from a rescue centre. You can find many pictures of them in my galleries. Like Denall, Archie loves the sea.
