For me, the contrast between fore- and background is too strong: simple shape and strong colour// many different shapes and white/brown of the buildings.
So the eye cannot decide what to look at exactly. Maybe there should be more of the ship in the foreground? Or you could crop it at the rleft side to loose the brown /white building and so reduce the quantity of shapes a little?

Having looked at it again (and again) I'm inclined to agree with Peter, it IS a bit of a snapshot. Next time I go to Liverpool (thank goodness for the free bus pass) I'll re-take it and see how I can improve it.

I like this, but somehow it doesn't work with this perspective. I think more lightship would be good here (of course I don't know what the rest of it looks like). If another shot is not an option, I would crop the top of the lightship bow off, so you only have a diagonal line. The line guide at the top and the building(?) in the background are distracting, and as the sky is washed out anyway, you won't be losing much off the top. I tried the crop on my screen and think it would work. What do you think?

I see what you're about here Bernard, but I think you could have tackled this another way. As it is, the red bow sort of imposes itself in the frame, and is a bit of a distraction. If there had been some mirror or echo of its strong diagonal form in the background, that might have worked. The bow is a pretty solid thing, and it's difficult to incorporate it into the frame at this shooting distance. Maybe a wider angle or shooting lower down with a different perspective might help.

Ok, I thought you might be trying to show a contrast between the two objects, I think photographically, the message your trying to project isn't that clear, maybe being wider, showing more of the ship, to try and show its age. Other then that, having not been there, there isn't much more I can suggest. Sorry.

This is part of the Stanley Dock complex at Liverpool.
I realise the sky is washed out, but I was trying to get the bow of the old light ship (the red on the right of the picture) in shot while getting a picture of the new Dock and Mersey Control Centre (I think it is) in the distance.

Bernard, I look at this image, and I just have a bit ?, it looks like a bit of a snap shot... anymore information you can provide to go with it?
