American Three-toed Woodpecker (juvenile) IMG_9612.jpg

If you look at the juvenile (or immature) you will notice that the head is definitely more rounded than is the adult. The adult's forehead slopes more. I have seen this in field guides (i.e., via drawings) but I have not seen anybody adequately describe it.

This is the Rocky Mountain race.
