M1 - The Crab Nebula

This nebula was created from the explosion of a massive star. The resulting supernova
was visible to the naked eye and was recorded by Chinese and Arab astronomers when
it appeared in 1054 AD. It has expanded to a size of about 11 light years since then
and continues to expand at a rate of 900 miles per second. It is located in the
constellation Taurus, about 6500 light years from Earth.
