Zambia - Peace Corps Rural Aquaculture Promotion Project

The idea behind this project is to teach small scale farmers how to build 100 to 300 sq. meter ponds, to stock it with tilapia, fertilize it with garden wastes, manure and high-nitrogen plant leaves and harvest 30 kg. of fish every six months. The farmer needs a source of water and soil that is high in clay content so it won't leak too much. Peace Corps volunteers teach farmers how to build the pond with only a hoe and maybe a wheelbarrow to move earth and to fertilize the pond with things that cost no money at all.
