I met these children a few days after arriving in my village. Their clothes are ragged but not uncommon, and they have smiles on their faces. The Bembas with whom I worked did not name their newborn babies for a couple of weeks after they were born. Infant mortality within that time was high due to sickle cell anemia and they felt that if they did not name their babies until they were sure they weren't going to die, they would not get too attached to them if they did die.
