Windmills and Waterways

A walk to the outer canal surrounding the central city of Bruges took us to parklands, the first really green area we had seen in Bruges, and to the four proud windmills. These date from the 19th century when the ramparts along the outer canal were dotted with 29 windmills. Just four remain. Walking further along the parkland beside the canal brought us to Kruisport, the impressive city gate, early 15th century but repeatedly rebuilt.

The large canal is navigated by boats and large ships which pass along aided by a swing bridge, holding back road traffic and allowing them to pass through.

On another day we took a tourist boat trip ourselves to Damme, 7km from Bruges and once a port in the Middle Ages for cargo ships from the Baltic and Meditteranean Seas.
