The Lötschental is considered the most beautiul of the Valais valleys and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
"Ferden is the first village in the Loetschental and is therefore the gateway to the most unspoilt alpine valley...... some buildings date back to the 14th and 15th centuries and provide evidence of the architecture and construction methods of this era." Guide
The Valais (Wallis in German)is Switzerland's third largest canton and is the valley of the River Rhone to Lake Geneva. Still a wild and little known area beyond the famous resort of Zermatt, the only town of any size is Sion.
"The stunningly beautiful Loetschental, comprising half a dozen tranquil communities strung out along ten km of the valley floor and overlooked on both sides by alpine ridges topping 3300 metres. The huge glaciers sliding down from the Konkordiaplatz are a constsnt presence at the head of the valley." Guide.
The road through the Lötschental ends at Fafleralp which has just two hotels and is a very popular camping spot in Summer for walking and a paradise for snow sports in winter. See my Blog post .
