The Midland Highway, which links Launceston and Hobart, echoes with Tasmania's convict and colonial history. In this area, known as the Heritage Highway Region, weathered sandstone bridges and houses, fine estates, rolling farmlands and picturesque towns abound.
We enjoyed Evandale and surrounding towns in the summer of 2013, a pretty colonial Georgian town, on a village fair day with the Penny Farthing Races underway; Longford, on a day celebrating 200 years of the resettlement there of the first Norfolk Islanders and, therefore, a gathering of descendants and a display of memorabilia. The sun shone on both occasions. In 2013 we saw some heritage estates. Woolmers and the Brickendon Farm Estate with its Heritage Garden. Brickendon has been owned and run by the same family for seven generations. Campbell Town and Ross, further south on the Midland Highway, have fine stone bridges and public buildings.
A repeat and enjoyable visit in 2021, staying in a B&B at Longford.
Again, in 2022, we enjoyed a drive through the Midlands from Hobart to Launceston, a beautiful taste of England in Australia.
