A second visit to Tasmania's "second city" in 2021, the first in 2013 and some of those images remain here.
"Launceston's early colonial and Victorian buildings provide one of the most intact early Australian cityscapes, ... " guide
We were intrigued with the small and quiet city of Launceston - hardly a building over two storeys but a great many beautiful examples of Georgian, Victorian and Art Deco, painted and preserved with original colour schemes. One can stroll the entire city in a leisurely half day, taking in the area around the charming GPO and municipal buildings, churches, gardens and then the waterfront along the Tamar where yachts are moored and restaurants open onto a riverside boardwalk.
We revisited Launceston's natural attraction, the breathtaking Cataract Gorge, a cool and exhilarating experience just a 15 minute walk from the city centre, and saw for the first time the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery with many fine examples of early colonial art where the John Glover Art Award entries were on display.
