The Huon River and the Huon Valley are easily explored from Hobart, just a 20 minute drive to the start and can be comfortably completed in a day. The area is renowned for scenic beauty, apple and cherry orchards, pretty towns and boat moorings and from Geeveston there is a 29 km drive to the Tahune Forest.
Franklin, south of Huonville, is the riverside town known for its wooden boat industry.
We visited the Huon Valley and the Hartz Mountains in 2010 and again,in 2017/8.
The Tahune Forest Airwalk, close to the Hartz Mountains National Park, is a steel bridge walkway high above the Huon River in the Tahune Forest of southern Tasmania."The AirWalk averages heights between 20-30metres above the forest floor, with the very last section, the cantilever, sitting at a height of 50 metres above the river and is where you will get the best views. On the way up to the AirWalk you will encounter 112 gradual concrete steps with places to sit and rest." guide
The Hartz Mountains at the southern end of the Huon Valley are part of the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area. We visited this area in 2010 while on a home exchange in Blackmans Bay, Hobart.
