"Hobart, capital of Australia's island state of Tasmania, sits on the River Derwent. At its fashionable Salamanca Place, old sandstone warehouses host galleries and cafes. Nearby is Battery Point, a historic district with narrow lanes and colonial-era cottages. The city's backdrop is 1,270m-high Mount Wellington, with sweeping views, plus hiking and cycling trails" Guide
We have explored much of Hobart through brief holidays in nearby areas. We enjoyed a two week home exchange in Blackmans Bay, a small township just 15 minutes drive south from central Hobart and overlooking a picturesque and popular beach. From there we were able to drive to much of the south of Tasmania. Hobart itself has charming Georgian architecture and commands a superb position on the Derwent River.
A new stamp on Hobart's attractions is Mona, an innovative and exciting new gallery built down river from the city and drawing crowds from all over the world. The Museum of Old and New Art, MONA, is Australia's largest private museum and one of the most controversial private collections of modern art and antiquities in the world.
In May 2022, we spent a few days in Hobart after sailing in comfort overnight on the Spirit of Tasmania with our car and a trip down the east coast to admire the beaches, including Coles Bay NP. An enjoyable revisit to this city, described above.
