Hamburg 2017

Germany's second largest city, one of the greatest ports in Europe, is connected to the North Sea via the river Elbe. We walked around the central city but explored most of Hamburg on the water via ferry boat rides from one attraction to another, viewing huge cranes and docks, dry docks and harbours, new and exciting architecture and suburban areas of housing and beaches. Canals that once carried produce through the mercantile area now allow breathing space among the offices and renovated warehouses. Much of this aspect of Hamburg and the vast areas of redbrick reminded us of the docklands areas of London but Hamburg is far bigger and still a very active and important port.

"The good times began to roll in the early Middle Ages after it fostered links with the Hanseatic leader, Lubeck..... the city's 2,302 bridges are more than those of Venice, Amsterdam and London combined." Guide

One of the latest attractions in Hamburg, drawing the attention of not just tourists but of proud local inhabitants, is the new Elbphilharmonie, built in an eye-catching location on the harbour, and offering free tours of the interior as well as fine views of the docklands from all sides.
