The easternmost bay in Lake Malaren is in central Stockholm, Riddarfjarden, and we see some of the high towers from our window.
The city is built on 14 islands with bridges linking each one. It is easy to walk across, or take a bus, tram or ferry ride. Ferries plough the waters frequently, a public ferry arrives at most ports of call every 15 minutes. There are also tourist ferries, hop on hop off or sightseeing rides available readily.
"Sweden's capital is one of the most beautiful major cities in the world, a mirage of saffron and terra-cotta coloured buildings shimmering between blue water and bluer skies all summer ..."LP
The City Hall spire, features three golden crowns and, along with its tower, is one of the most famous silhouettes. It is the venue for the Nobel Prize banquet and reception each year for the recipients. Old Town, the island of Gamla Stam, is a maze of cobble-stoned streets, red, orange and cream coloured buildings and contains the Royal Palace. South of that is another island neighbourhood, Sodermalm, with high waterfront hills, elegant old residences, bohemian shops and galleries.
