As we come in for final approach, we can see the channel between Buota, the last islet that is connected by road on South Tarawa (on the right in this photo), and the first of the islets on the chain of islets that make up North Tarawa. To cross between these, villagers wade across the channel at low tide, or take canoes at high tide.
