Racetrack Playa is in one of the more remote places in Death Valley NP. You have to drive a 27-mile jarring washboard dirt road to get there. Then, after about a half mile hike across the dry lake bed you arrive at what it is most famous for, mysterious moving stones that leave trails on the lake bed floor. Some stones weigh 100 pounds or more.
The mystery of the moving stones was solved when scientists observed them slowly sliding on top of a thin layer of ice over a very shallow lake formed by winter rains that accumulated at the south end of the playa during the winter of 2014. The trails are formed by the wake of the sliding stones which are actually lifted off the lake bed surface by the ice.
