Sinagua indian cliff dwelling ruins and rock art site west of Sedona, Arizona USA. This site is unique in that it contains mostly petrographs but does have some petroglyphs. The difference is that a petrograph is painted onto a rock surface using mixed pigments or charcoal whereas a petroglyph is carved or chipped directly into the rock. It is also unusual in that it contains the oldest known Native American rock art called hachures. This site along the bottom of spectacular red cliffs contains markings accumulated from a period of off and on occupation over about 6,000 years. The cliff dwellings were build between 1150 and 1250 AD during the period of largest population.
