Here is the outlet of the tunnel into the trench. The trench is about three metres deep here. The inspection opening doesn't reach ground level. It will be extended later.

Dougie the excavator driver had struggled to make this trench vertical, but the rock fractured along the inclined strata lines. We couldn't straighten it with the jack hammer either, as the trench was too narrow to dig into the side.
