Chinese embroidery is one of my main collection topics. I have seen and touched thousands of beautiful Chinese embroidery work. This one is one of the bests I have seen and definitely the best bird and flower embroidery artwork from China or in the whole world.
Just the flowers are already astonishing. Many different color of cotton threads were used to make subtle color change. The birds are absolutely out this world. There must be hundreds of different colors of cotton threads used to make smooth color transitions and details so every bird looks so vivid.
Every bird is different and lively! The center main bird is phoenix, it has the best embroidery quality. Some of the smaller birds on the perimeters have little less embroidery quality. This indicates this piece was finished by more than one person. The center main bird was probably finished by a master and some of the perimeter smaller birds were done by apprentices. It is typical for an embroidery artwork like this size to take few persons to finish. A gentleman from Suzhou embroider factory told me a size like this would take few embroidery ladies few months to finish. The labor cost alone would be $5,000 to $10,000. This piece has so many details.
This piece definitely looks much better than some embroidery work auctioned for above $5,000. I feel this stands the highest quality of Chinese bird and flower embroidery work.
