Looking for Owls

Irvine Regional Park, CA

I joined a friend of mine and the local Audubon chapter for a walk to spot owls at Irvine Park. We started late afternoon with a bird walk followed by a leisurely sack dinner. At dusk we went to a spot where we should be able see a Lesser Nighthawk or two come from their roost to feed. While we waited one of the birders who was determined to spot a Cactus Wren, did finally spot one with her scope on a hill across the way.

We waited and waited for the Lesser Nighthawk and finally gave up so that we could start looking for a Screech Owl. As we walked away two Lesser Nighthawks flew past us. We all got a chance to see them.

No luck finding owls. Maybe next time.

It was a lovely afternoon and evening.

This picture was taken in the area where we were waiting for the Lesser Nighthawk.
