For centuries, the Minaret of Jam was forgotten about by the outside world, until it was re-discovered in 1886, by Holdich, working for the Afghan Boundary Commission. It did not come to world attention, however, until 1957 through the work of the French archaeologists André Maricq and Wiet. Herberg conducted limited surveys around the site in the 1970s, before the Soviet invasion of 1979 once again cut it off for the outside world.

Pendant des siècles le Minaret de Jam est resté oublié du monde extérieur, jusqu'à sa redécouverte en 1886 par Holdich qui travaillait alors pour la commission des frontières afghanes. Pourtant ce n'est qu'à partir de 1957, grâce au travail des archéologues français André Maricq et Wiet, que le monde s'y intéressera. Herberg a dirigé quelques études autour du site dans les années 70, avant que l'invasion soviétique de 1979 ne le coupe une fois encore du monde extérieur.
