The Whirlpool Galaxy (Messier 51); also known as NGC 5194

Taken from Beckwith Township, ON

Messier 51 (M51), better known as the Whirlpool Galaxy, is a famous grand-design spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici.
The Whirlpool Galaxy has an apparent magnitude of 8.4 and lies at an approximate distance of 23 million light years from Earth. It has the designation NGC 5194 in the New General Catalogue.

M51’s smaller companion (left of M51), NGC 5195, is a dwarf galaxy that is interacting with the Whirlpool Galaxy.

56 x 90 second light subs; Nikon D7200; ISO1600; Nikkor 300mm f/4E PR lens; F/5.17 (aperture mask used); on a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer mini equatorial mount. Total integration is 1 hour and twenty-four minutes.

Shot in RAW; converted to TIFF files using ACR; Stacked in DSS; processed in CS6.
