This aircraft was assigned to JG3; the "Udet" Geshwader; and this type had the more powerful Jumo 213 engine that allowed it to climb higher and engage U.S. bomber streams.

This particular aircraft is on loan from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

The large aircraft in the background is a Curtiss C-46 "Commando".
