I had the pleasure of working with Rene' Assa in the fall/winter of 1980 in Gibsons, British Columbia. My dad had a log home business there and we were building a log addition to Canadian actor Bruno Gerussi's home above Gibson's Bay. Rene' and I shared many stories of our travels and adventures while performing the back-breaking labor it took to build the addition. Rene' told me of his acting career up to that point and how he had always hoped to get some major roles. Looking back, he did quite well. He had a great sense of humor and one time when Bruno was bickering about something that wasn't just right, Rene' said to me "He's worried about a lousy two inches and I'm worried about where my next meal is coming from!" We had a blast mocking Bruno from then on, which made our work more enjoyable. When we parted our ways, I went back in the U.S. Navy and Rene' headed back to L.A. at some point, never to see each other again. I had always hoped our paths would cross again, as in the short time we spent together, we became good friends. I tried to locate Rene' over the years, but had the wrong spelling of his last name. When I finally found this gallery while web-surfing last night, I was saddened to learn of Rene's passing. I'm sure he is missed by many people from all walks of life, because I know he brought joy into many peoples' lives. Rest in peace, brother, and thanks for the memories!
