After 2 years, I finally got the Saturday before Christmas off work and got to participate in my first CBC since moving to Kentucky. After the kick-off breakfast at Denny's, I headed off to bird the Raven's Run area. After checking the trail map I decided to simply take lefts at every turn which would take me around the outside edge of the sanctuary, spending most my time in the wooded sections of the park. This strategy paid off as I found some good woodland species that included Brown Creeper, Winter Wren, Hairy Woodpecker, and Golden-crowned Kinglet. The views at the Kentucky River were outstanding but I couldn't find any water birds on the river. It was a cold but beautiful day for birding.
