A Hindu Gothic Gate near Villierstown.Dromana Gate was originally built in 1826 of wood and papier maché to greet Thersia Pauline Ott of Vienna, on her return from honeymoon with her new husband, local landlord Henry Villiers-Stuart (1803 – 1874).The couple were so enchanted with the bridge that they had it reconstructed in more durable materials namely stone. The magnificent building was finished in 1851. It’s said that the inspiration came from the Brighton Pavilion in England. The design is a bizarre combination of styles, from flamboyant gothic with arched windows, to Brighton pavilion oriental, complete with onion dome and minarets - a curious sight indeed in rural Ireland.
